About Simvastatin

Simvastatin, the chemical name for Merck & Co.'s cholesterol lowering drug Zocor, is a single-ingredient medication that is sold both by itself and in combination with other drugs, specifically ezetimibe to make Vytorin and niacin to make Simcor. Simvastatin is an inhibitor that affects cholesterol production in the liver, interrupting cholesterol synthesis and lipoprotein consumption, consequently reducing both cholesterol serum triglyceride levels. However, simvastatin use can also lead to other health ailments that users, specifically those taking 80 mg doses, become more susceptible to as the result of using the drug.

According to the Food and Drug Adminstration's Deputy Director of FDA's Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products (DMEP), a "review of simvastatin is part of an ongoing FDA effort to evaluate the risk of statin-associated muscle injury and to provide that information to the public as it becomes available." Muscle injury consists of muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, and eventual break down. It's that breakdown that leads to the release of a certain protein, myoglobin, that damages the kidneys as they filter blood out of the body. The FDA goes on to warn that "it's important for patients and healthcare professionals to consider all the potential risks and known benefits of any drug before deciding on any one therapy or dose of therapy." Unfortunately though, simvastatin in 80 mg dosages, the only such dosage considered a viable threat towards causing kidney failure, is still being prescribed to patients, despite all recent warnings against the drug. Furthermore, kidney failure brought about by simvastatin use can also lead to other debilitating health conditions, particularly those pertaining to the cardiovascular system.
