Zocor Rhabdomyolysis LawyersRhabdomyolysisThe condition known as rhabdomyolysis is the most serious form of myopathy, or muscle injury. Rhabdomyolysis is a potential side effect of using any form of statin medications, including Zocor (chemically known as simvastatin). It is a degenerative affliction that can severely injure an individual's kidneys, which could eventually lead to kidney failure and possible death. Rhabdomyolysis elevates creatine kinase levels in the blood, and occurs when muscle fibers break down, and a protein known as myoglobin is released. Unfortunately, myoglobin wreaks havoc on the kidneys as they attempt to filter blood out of the body, causing permanent damage that results in kidney injury. Not being able to function properly, renal failure may ensue, put stress on the body which in turn can affect cardiovascular well being, and ultimately lead to the user's death. Rhabdomyolysis is characterized by muscle pain, tenderness, and muscle weakness. Individuals afflicted with rhabdomyolysis also suffer from fatigue, muscle stiffness (myalgia), and may have dark or red colored urine. However, those suffering from rhabdomyolysis may simply disregard muscle pain and fatigue as something minor, and may fail to connect Zocor as the cause of it all. Unfortunately, if left untreated, rhabdomyolysis can be deadly, and it's all because an 80 mg dosage of Zocor was prescribed to the afflicted individual in the first place. The higher the dose of Zocor, the more likely it is that users will develop myopathy, which in turn can become rhabdomyolysis. In 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), issued a warning that Zocor use may be linked to rhabdomyolysis. Just recently in 2010, the FDA advised medical professionals to avoid prescribing Zocor in dosages higher than 40 mg if their patients were taking other medications at the same time, and declared that Zocor used in 80 mg dosages greatly increases the likelihood of rhabdomyolysis developing in users. Despite these warnings, Zocor continues to be dispenses to patients in the 80 mg dosage. Pharmaceutical negligence is a complicated branch of product liability law. Clinical studies and known patient injuries need to be thoroughly examined in order to help hold negligent pharmaceutical companies and medical professionals accountable for prescribing their patients dangerous medication.
