Zocor Lawsuits

When we are ill, we entrust our well being into the hands of physicians and other medical professionals. However, when doctors and physicians fail to provide adequate or appropriate care for their patients, that failure may be labeled as negligence in the eyes of the law. For users of Zocor, significant side effects brought about by taking 80 mg doses of the drug could lead to severe muscle injury, eventual kidney failure, and possible death. Zocor lawsuits are a means of offsetting the substantial costs of Zocor side effects - lost wages, medical bills, and any number of potential complications.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the active ingredient in Zocor, simvastatin, may pose a health risk to those individuals who take the drug in doses of 80 mg. Specifically, the high dosage can bring about myopathy, which could eventually lead to rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure. While a doctor may prescribe an 80 mg dose of Zocor believing that it is in the best interest of the patient, and that the benefits certainly outweigh the risks, any medication that has been clinically shown to increase the likelihood of organ failure and eventual death needs to be more carefully prescribed.

The first FDA Zocor warning, in 2008, noted the dangerous correlation between rhabdomyolysis and Zocor use. In March of 2010, the FDA announced two more warnings against Zocor, this time specific to:

  • patients of Chinese decent prescribed an 80 mg dosage of Zocor who already take niacin-containing products
  • patients prescribed a 40 mg dosage of Zocor who already take niacin-containing products to help lower cholesterol

The FDA also warned physicians to avoid prescribing doses of Zocor greater than 40 mg when those patients are already taking diltiazem (the chemical name for a blood pressure medication). Furthermore, the FDA found that many patients, despite label warnings and advisement against taking higher dosages of Zocor, were still being prescribed the 80 mg dose by physicians. Any instance where a physician prescribes a high dosage of Zocor, despite the fact that a patient may already be taking another medication that interacts poorly with Zocor, may be representative of failure to take a proper patient history and could be deemed as a negligent action on the part of the physician - a critical component in any Zocor lawsuit. Just compensation for the pain, suffering, and staggering medical costs caused by these Zocor side effects can and should be fought for in a court of law by an experienced Zocor lawsuit attorney.

If you're suffering from 80 mg Zocor side effects, don't hesitate to consult with a physician. The best course of action pursuant to filing a Zocor lawsuit involves retaining the services of an experienced Zocor lawyer who will hold negligent physicians accountable for their actions. A Pennsylvania personal injury lawyer at Anapol Schwartz will fight to ensure that your rights as a victim are not infringed upon in a court of law, and will hold physicians accountable for all instances of negligence that contributed towards your injury.
