Zocor Kidney Failure/Renal Failure and Death

Zocor, the popular cholesterol-lowering drug manufactured by Merck & Co., has been linked to kidney failure which could lead to death, according to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clinical trials which have shown the 80 mg dosage of the drug to be harmful to users. The drug, also known as simvastatin, is intended to inhibit cholesterol production in the liver, but doses of 80 mg have been found to have adverse side effects as well when used.

Zocor, part of the class of drugs known as statins, interrupts cholesterol synthesis and lipoprotein consumption, lowering both an individual's cholesterol level and serum triglyceride level. However, in doing so, muscle injury, known as myopathy, may occur. Myopathy is characterized by muscle tenderness, an increase of a muscle enzyme, creatine kinase, in the blood, and eventual muscle breakdown, known as rhabdomyolysis. This muscle breakdown releases an enzyme known as myoglobin, which is harmful to the kidneys, and which may lead to Zocor renal failure side effects. While Zocor is prescribed in 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg dosages, the likelihood of kidney failure occurring greatly increases as the milligram level rises. According to the FDA, patients who are prescribed higher doses of Zocor run the highest risk of developing rhabdomyolysis, which can result in severe kidney damage and sometimes even death.

Drug manufacturers have an obligation to provide consumers with prescription medication that will not harm their well-being. Even if a drug, such as Zocor, is considerably safer when taken at a lower dosage, that does not mean that an elevated dosage, such as 80 mg, won't be extremely harmful for consumers to take. Although the FDA has warned against the dangers of 80 mg Zocor use, it is still being prescribed by physicians and patients are still succumbing to the crippling effects of the kidney damage and other physical ailments that it is causing.

If you are suffering from rhabdomyolysis that has lead to renal failure while taking 80 mg dosages of Zocor, or have lost a loved one due to kidney failure that may have been a Zocor side effect, please do not hesitate to contact the Zocor injury attorneys at Anapol Schwartz.
